Biodiversity Management: update of quarry restoration studies and a new biodiversity study at the Leros aggregates quarry

Starting from the areas of Xirokampos on the island of Leros, this biodiversity study concerns a TITAN quarry which is located inside a protected area. The Kamari and Loutsa-Remeri restoration studies aim to update our existing restoration studies in the light of the new trends in biodiversity. To that end, we chose to collaborate with specialized, non-profit agencies, such as the Hellenic Ornithological Society (HOS) and the Department of Biology of the University of Patras. Our ultimate aim was to establish an integrated Biodiversity Management Plan and to update our restoration plans according to CSI guidelines.
In order to improve rehabilitation and protect biological diversity ΤΙΤΑΝ:

  • Monitors all its active quarries to identify areas of high biodiversity value, using special screening tools/applications, such as the Integrated Biodiversity Assessment Tool (IBAT).
  • Uses the method of “hydro-seeding” to rehabilitate depleted or destroyed areas. The method has been applied to the quarries in Kamari and Loutsa-Remeri.
  • Draws up biodiversity assessment studies recording of the local flora and restoring the process of natural succession.
  • Creates an illustrated identification guide of plant species which is used for the rehabilitation of each quarry.

The implementation of the action plan in collaboration with the local authorities and communities is based on the ecological requirements and the threats faced by certain priority species/habitats, and includes maintenance targets, management actions and a proposal for rehabilitation. Following the assessment study, a quarry rehabilitation proposal is put forward, in accordance with current international trends and best practices, with an aim to maximize the benefits in terms of local biodiversity, especially in cases of priority species/habitats.
