The construction of the “Ionia Odos” motorway, from Antirrio to Ioannina, commenced in 2010 and it was delivered in 2017. It is a project of strategic importance, since it facilitates the interconnection of regions in Western Greece whilst joining the specific geographical area with the rest of the country and with basic infrastructure such as the ports of Patra and Igoumenitsa as well as “Egnatia Odos” and “Olympia Odos”.

The project construction presented a huge challenge since it involved completely new road alignment, in an environment with singular geological conditions and uneven terrain. It involves 196 kilometres of modern, high-specification motorway, 24 bridges and 4 tunnels as well as numerous other supporting projects.

TITAN’s participation throughout the length of the motorway and in the supporting works was of great significance: the cantilever erection of the bridges required high strength concrete, whilst the Menidi bridge was entirely built with TITAN cement. Our participation in the tunnels of the Antirrio-Agrinio section as well as in the road paving project from Stanos to Ioannina was to the same extent.

Two of the most important benefits from the construction of the “Ionia Odos” motorway pertain to the reduction of travel time for the journey from Antirion to Ioannina from 3 hours and 30 minutes to 1 hour and 40 minutes and to the substantial improvement of safety and comfort.

At the same time, the project has contributed to the greater development of Western Greece, improving accessibility to areas of high tourism and archaeological interest, aiding the growth of commerce and significantly upgrading the urban and rural centres of the greater geographical region.
