A pomegranate serves as a symbol for the future

With the symbolic planting of tree no. “2,000,000”, TITAN commemorates the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature and celebrates its long-standing cooperation with the HSPN

On Saturday, 29 May, a pomegranate was planted in the yard of the 3rd Secondary School of Oreokastro in a very symbolic act, marking the cooperation between TITAN and the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature (HSPN), which in 2021 celebrates its 70 years of constant efforts to protect the natural environment throughout Greece.

The number assigned to the pomegranate is “2,000,000”, reflecting the number of trees planted by TITAN throughout the country since 1971, when TITAN launched its environmental restoration and tree-planting programme.  The company has unfailingly pursued it with actions at quarry sites, in areas stricken by natural disasters and in numerous municipalities and regions in Greece, observing European and global trends in biodiversity issues, adhering to international standards and using appropriate tools.

The Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature has been closely collaborating with TITAN for several decades and, as HSPN’s Vice President Alexia Nikiforaki pointed out at the event –which was organized on the occasion–, the company’s involvement in the rehabilitation of quarry zones and its participation in synergies to protect the natural environment set an example in the modern business world, demonstrating its awareness that sustainability is the only way forward for our planet.

Kostas Nikolaou, Manager of TITAN’s Efkarpia plant, spoke about the significant work of the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature, the oldest and one of the most active environmental NGOs in Greece. Through environmental interventions, projects and programmes aimed at the protection of nature, the HSPN –in cooperation with the Foundation for Environmental Education– has raised awareness and has educated thousands of students and hundreds of environmental teachers, as well as thousands of people in Greece on aspects related to the country’s natural heritage. The HSPN’s valuable know-how has been turned to account in local studies undertaken for the protection of biodiversity in areas where TITAN operates, and results have been excellent.

The event –organized with the support of the Deputy Mayor’s Office for Everyday Life and the Parents’ Association of the Municipality of Oreokastro– was held in the yard of the 3rd Secondary School, in compliance with all prescribed safety measures. As of Saturday, the two-metre pomegranate is under the care of the school community, which has distinguished itself with its initiatives and sensibility.

TITAN is the grand sponsor of this year’s events to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the HSPN.
