Health and Safety

HEALTH AND SAFETY AT WORK COMMITMENT STARTS AT THE TOP

Creating and nurturing a safety culture require –and enjoy– the commitment and active involvement of every executive and every employee throughout the organization.

It extends to all levels by means of the following three pillars, which forge a highly organized management system.

PILLAR 1

PROMOTING SAFE BEHAVIOURS

  • Promote a high sense of self-protection and mutual protection among all our employees and partners.
  • Train our employees and partners in health & safety issues according to an annual plan.
  • Encourage all our employees and partners to report near misses, which we investigate and analyse in order to act appropriately and prevent real accidents.
  • Monitor behaviours with regard to health & safety in the workplace. We identify unsafe actions, for which we take corrective measures, but also good practices, which we reward.

PILLAR 2

COMPREHENSIVE EMPLOYEE TRAINING AND EVALUATION

  • All our cement plants have a full-time and exclusive Health and Safety Manager.
  • Highly trained experts supervise and coordinate operations and projects performed daily at our units.
  • Employees are evaluated, taking into consideration their specific tasks and roles in terms of health & safety. Same systematic evaluations apply to our partners and contractors.
  • Employees are also rewarded, as for example with the Occupational Safety Award.
PILLAR 3

CERTIFICATION AND PROCEDURES

  • Follow closely a comprehensive and certified health and safety management system in accordance with international standards.
  • Apply Occupational Safety Guidelines (OSG), Occupational Safety Analyses (OSA) and other relevant procedures which reflect the safe methodology for the execution of a task, the rules that should be followed, the experience and good practices of employees, etc. Maintenance of the facilities is carried out in accordance with the manufacturers’ instructions. Special attention is paid to preventive checks of the equipment that pertains to the safety of the facilities and staff.
  • Organize inspections at our plants according to an annual plan, conducted by trained staff or outsourced to experts.
  • Identify risks and take appropriate measures in order to ensure the safety of our employees and partners. To this end, we draft risk assessment reports and occupational safety plans.
  • Prepare for emergencies with organized contingency plans and appropriate incident response teams, such as the Samaritans for first aid, fire safety teams, technical support, etc.
