School children familiarising themselves with the future in TITAN’s Nea Efkarpia plant
Seminars on Educational Robotics under the collaboration of TITAN, ATEITH and AUTH
The Educational Robotics Seminars for school students from the areas of Nea Efkarpia, Lagyna and Drymos are taking place in TITAN's plant in Nea Efkarpia with large participation. The seminars aim to familiarise young children with the advances in technology through hands-on experience.
The seminar series began on 9 October 2016 and will be completed in March 2017. It is aimed at Elementary (Grades 4, 5 and 6) and Junior High School students, whilst the final number of participants is expected to exceed 200. Each series, which consists of 2 groups of 25 children, covers a total of 8 hours in 4 two-hour sessions and takes place at the plant’s function hall, with the implementation cost being covered entirely by the plant.
The design and syllabus of the seminars has been developed by the Department of Automation Engineering of the Alexander Technological Educational Institute of Thessaloniki (ATEITH), in collaboration with the School of Mechanical Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), under the supervision of ATEITH Professor Apostolos Tsagkaris and AUTH Professor Gabriel Mansour. Students are trained by experienced ATEITH teachers – associates.
The seminars include all implementation stages, from requirement analysis, design and manufacturing to planning and checking proper operation of an integrated construction. Students have the opportunity to learn the practical applications of sciences, such as mathematics, physics, engineering and computer science. Inspired by robotics, they experiment, design, manufacture and interact with other members of their group, whilst developing key skills of analytical and critical thinking, teamwork and cooperation, handling and communication, as well as problem solving.
The results so far of the educational seminars will be presented at the 3rd Student Robotics Festival organised by the Regional Directorate of Primary & Secondary Education of Central Macedonia and the Directorate of Secondary Education of Western Thessaloniki, which will be held on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 December 2016.
