ON 11th MAY 2005 A CEREMONY WAS HELD AT THE ANCIENT SITE OF NEMEA, IN THE PELOPONESE

On 11th May 2005 a ceremony was held at the ancient site of Nemea, in the Peloponese, to mark the restoration of two columns from the Temple of Nemean Zeus.

The archaeologist in charge of the excavations, Professor Stephen Miller, welcomed the guests to the museum and archaeological site, while Professor Nikos Makris led them on a tour of the Temple of Zeus.

The proceedings also featured speeches by the Director of the 37th Ephorate of Antiquities, Dr. Alexandros Mantis, the Deputy Minister for Culture, Mr. Petros Tatoulis, and the Mayor of Nemea, Mr. Nikolaos Papaioannou. Professor Miller spoke of the background to the restoration and the difficulties that had to be overcome in completing the project.

The U.S. Ambassador, Mr. Charles Ries, and the Prefect of Corinth, Mr. N. Tagaras, unveiled a marble column erected to honour those whose assistance had made possible the work of restoration over the years 1980-2002.
