COMPLETION OF THE RION-ANTIRRION BRIDGE
Lavish celebrations were held on 7 August to mark the completion of work on the remarkable Rion-Antirrion Bridge. Under a sky lit up with fireworks crowds of people gathered to marvel at one of Greece’s most ambitious ever construction projects – the longest cable bridge in the world, with a continuous span of 2,252 metres. Titan Cement S.A. was one of the main sponsors of the celebrations to mark the bridge’s completion.
It is now more than a century since the Greek Prime Minister of the time, Harilaos Trikoupis, first envisioned a bridge to link central Greece with the Peloponnese. Work on the bridge began seven years ago, allowing the vision of the great Greek politician finally to become a reality in the year 2004.
The bridge has been described as one of the most challenging and ground-breaking construction projects in the world. The designs called for special grades of cement and Titan Cement S.A. – with its expertise and production capacity – has been proud to meet the rigorous construction demands of the project as exclusive supplier of all cement required.
