Sustainability of local communities

Educational Robotics Programme in Nea Efkarpia – Children are trained in… the future!

The evolution of technology brings us closer to a future in which the cooperation of human intelligence with the machines it invents shall far exceed our imagination.

With this in mind and driven by our strong tradition in hosting events that offer significant knowledge and experiential learning to the local community and especially to children, staff members from our Efkarpia plant came up with the idea of organizing an Educational Robotics programme.

They contacted Apostolos Tsangaris, Professor at the Alexander Technological Educational Institute of Thessaloniki (ATEITH), and Gabriel Mansour, Professor at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, both tutors of this subject, and asked them to design and implement a programme on our behalf at the Efkarpia unit.

The plant managers then contacted the school directors and parents and guardians associations of all neighbouring communities to announce the programme and to invite the participation of students, which was offered free of charge as all implementation expenses of the programme were covered by our plant, which also provided the required equipment.

Seminars were aimed at Primary and Secondary Education students (from 4th up to 9th grade) and were held at the plant’s lecture hall.

The programme started on 9 October 2016 and was completed in March 2017. Participants were divided into 8 teams of 25 students and came from schools in the Efkarpia, Drimos and Lagina areas.

The seminars covered all implementation stages, ranging from analysis of requirements, design, building and programming to actually testing the good operation of the final construction.

We covered the full cost of the seminars and provided all the required equipment.
